I imagine like many people who just got out of the first screening of X3 (well first for the west coast anyway) I felt I had to talk to someone about it, and since it is two in the morning most of my friends are asleep so I will talk a bit about it here.
Honestly there were two parts of the movie which really stood out, both based on internet meme (did I use the word right, I was never quit sure what it meant). The first, not chronologically but rather in terms of importance, was the phrase "Don't you know who I am, I'm the juggernaught bitch!" Thanks to director Brett Rattner for that little bit of nerd food. The second, which had no importance to this particular movie, but was possibly the highlight of the evening for me was the preview for
[link] starring Samuel mother fuckin Jackson. I have to say that after seeing that clip it is no wonder the following movie was a bit of a let down.
I liked it, don't get me wrong. I love all things X-men. They could have filmed Hugh Jackman drawing a yellow x in the snow and I still would have liked it, such is my devotion to the very idea of X-men. Thankfully the movie was better than my idea, it still fell short of the second film.
Things I liked: fastball special, Kelsey Grammer as Beast kicking ass, nods to comic book geeks such as my self, the fact that they weren't afraid to kill a main character.
Things I didn't like: The movie seemed as though it could have been truly awesome, but kept falling short, whether it was in the acting, cinematography, or writing department, the drunk sorority girls behind me who talked through the whole thing and had that oh so annoying habit of looking down on the people who shared the theater with them and being too drunk to quiet their condesending remarks to a whisper.
To be fair a large part of my underwhelming experiance may be due ot the fact that the theater I saw the movie in was little better that a big TV. The screen was adequate, but what really ruined the experience was the sound. The movie really lacked the power I think it would have had if the theater had a decent sound system. Also the bitches behind me sort of ruined the mood.
While I did enjoy the movie and I would recommend that X-men fans and non-fans see it, I fear this may have killed the franchise. The first two films managed to hold me in emotional moments and get me excited during the action. In this movie the emotional moments seemed cheasy. The action was good when fancy special effects were used, but I felt they skipped out on the basics of making a fight scene look good.
Well, enough of that. Bottom line, see the movie but go in with expectations on par with a typical summer action movie. Prepare not to be blown away, but to feel a brisk breeze tossle your hair and leave you 7 bucks poorer.
